Conservation Laws of Turbulence Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Conservation of mass, momentum, energy, helicity, and enstrophy in fluid flow are important because these quantities organize a flow, and characterize change in the flow’s structure over time. Thus, if a simulation of a turbulent flow is to be qualitatively correct, these quantities should be conserved in the simulation. However, such simulations are typically based on turbulence models whose conservation properties are little explored and might be very different from those of the Navier-Stokes equations. We explore conservation laws and approximate conservation laws satisfied by LES turbulence models. Consequences of Symmetries on the Analysis and Construction of Turbulence Models
Since they represent fundamental physical properties in turbulence (conservation laws, wall laws, Kolmogorov energy spectrum, . . . ), symmetries are used to analyse common turbulence models. A class of symmetry preserving turbulence models is proposed. This class is refined such that the models respect the second law of thermodynamics. Finally, an example of model belonging to the class is num...
متن کاملA kinetic theory of shock clustering in scalar conservation laws
We describe a kinetic theory for shock clustering in scalar conservation laws with random initial data. Our main discovery is that for a natural class of random data the shock clustering is described by a completely integrable Hamiltonian system. Thus, the problem is in a precise sense exactly solvable. Our results have implications in other areas: mathematical physics (limits of shell models o...
متن کاملModeling Jets in Cross Flow
Various approaches to the modeling of jets in cross flow are reviewed. These are grouped into four broad classes, namely: empirical models, integral models, perturbation models, and numerical models. Empirical models depend largely on the correlation of experimental data and are mostly useful for first-order estimates of global properties such as jet trajectory and velocity and temperature deca...
متن کاملConstant flux relation for driven dissipative systems.
Conservation laws constrain the stationary state statistics of driven dissipative systems because the average flux of a conserved quantity between driving and dissipation scales should be constant. This requirement leads to a universal scaling law for flux-measuring correlation functions, which generalizes the 4/5th law of Navier-Stokes turbulence. We demonstrate the utility of this simple idea...
